Bill on Amendments to Judges Act is sent to a 5 member Select Committee for review

The Bill on the Amendments to Judges Act is sent to a 5 member Select Committee for review during People’s Majlis’s 16th sitting of the first session today.

During today’s sitting, the first reading was held for the Bill on the Amendments to Judges Act (No. 13/2010) proposed by Hon. Riyaz Rasheed, MP for Vilufushi and the proposal for carrying out the preliminary debate of the Bill at today’s Sitting was passed with 26 votes in favour. 6 members voted against the debate with 1 abstention.

13 Members spoke during debate time allocated for the Bill. Later, the Majlis passed to accept the Bill with 31 votes in favour. 15 members voted against the bill with 1 abstention.

During the debate, Hon. Riyaz Rasheed, MP for Vilufushi proposed a motion seconded by Hon. Ilham Ahmed, MP for Dhangethi to send the bill to a Select Committee comprising of 5 members of the parliament and it was passed with 29 votes in favour. Thus, the members of the Select Committee proposed by Hon. Abdul Raheem Abdulla, MP for Fonadhoo and seconded by Hon. Ilham Ahmed, MP for Dhangethi was passed with 27 votes in favour. 12 Members voted against, and there were 4 abstentions.

The members of the Select Committee include Riyaz Rasheed, MP for Vilufushi, Hon. Ilham Ahmed, MP for Dhangethi, Hon. Ibrahim Falah, MP for Inguraidhoo, Hon. Abdul Raheem Abdulla, MP for Fonadhoo, and Hon. Ahmed Shiyam, MP for Naifaru.

Moreover, during today’s sitting, the first reading was also held for the Bill on the Amendments to Parliamentary Privileges Act (No. 5/2013) proposed by Hon. Abdullah Yameen, MP for Velidhoo.

The next sitting is scheduled on 29th April 2019.
