The Eighteenth People’s Majlis has elected Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed, MP for Fuahmulah-South as the Speaker and Moosa Manik, MP for Hulhu-Henveiru as the Deputy Speaker at the First Sitting of the Eighteenth Majlis, held today.
Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed, MP for Fuahmulah-South was elected as Speaker with 43 votes, while Moosa Manik, MP for Hulhu-Henveiru was elected Deputy Speaker with 42 votes.
The First Sitting of the Eighteenth Majlis was presided over by the longest serving Member of the People’s Majlis, Mohamed Hussain, MP for Kanditheemu, as stipulated in Article 82 (a) of the Constitution.
As stipulated in Article 82 (a) of the Constitution, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker were elected by the newly sworn-in Members by secret ballot, overseen by five-Member Select Committee. The members to the Committee were proposed by Ali Arif, MP for Kelaa and seconded by Riyaz Rasheed, MP for Vilufushi was elected with a unanimous vote of 84 votes. They are Ibrahim Didi, MP for Feydhoo; Umar Hussain, MP for Maradhoo; Anara Naeem, MP for Makunudhoo; Ilham Ahmed, MP for Dhangethi and Eva Abdulla, MP for Galholhu-North.
